Where to get historical NFL weather data
Spreadspoke's NFL weather dataset records the conditions for every NFL game played since the 1966 season — one row per game, with game-time temperature (°F), wind speed (mph), relative humidity (%), and a conditions field that marks indoor/dome games, retractable roofs, rain, snow, fog, and freezing rain. Because weather is stored in the same file as final scores, stadiums, point spreads, and over/under lines, you can study how conditions relate to scoring without stitching sources together.
- Coverage: 1966 – present, including playoffs and every Super Bowl.
- Weather fields: temperature for 13,900+ games, wind for 13,900+, humidity for 8,700+, 2,900+ indoor games, 200+ rain games, 60+ snow games, 70+ fog games are labeled.
- Packages: full weather history in Pro ($24.99/yr); additional derived weather features (temperature bands, high-wind / bad weather flags) in Analyst ($79/yr).
- Format: CSV for Excel, Google Sheets, Python, R, and SQL. Updated weekly during the season.

How Weather Has Affected NFL Scoring
Computed directly from the Spreadspoke dataset, 1966 – 2026. Totals compared against the closing over/under line; pushes excluded.
Wind speed vs. scoring (outdoor games)
Average combined points per game
Share of games finishing under the closing total
Bar length = value on a 0–50 pt / 0–100% scale. Under-rate denominators: 4,967 / 2,648 / 838 / 242 games with a closing total.
Conditions vs. scoring (all games)
Average combined points per game
Share of games finishing under the closing total
Snow and fog samples are small (65–70 games with a total) — treat as directional.
Outdoor games in 20+ mph wind averaged 35.7 combined points vs. 42.9 in calm conditions — and landed 3.65 points under the closing total on average.
Rain games finished under the total 59.5% of the time (227 games), averaging 2.7 points below the line.
Sub-freezing games scored fewer points (40.4 avg) but went under only 48.4% of the time. Cold is already priced in; wind and rain are what stand out.
Methodology. Each figure comes from the Spreadspoke NFL dataset (14,435 games, 1966 season through 2026). "Outdoor" excludes games tagged indoor or closed-roof. Under-rate is games whose combined score finished below the closing over/under line, divided by all games with a line, excluding exact pushes. Temperature bands follow the Analyst temp_bucket field. These are historical descriptive statistics for research and education; past results do not predict future outcomes and nothing here is betting advice.
